How a Sonoran Desert Bighorn permit actually works

Back to resources

Sheep tags in Sonora aren't a draw — they're allocated. Here is who gets them, what they cost, and how to position yourself for the hunt of a lifetime.

A Sonoran Desert Bighorn ram is one of the rarest big-game trophies in North America. Unlike Arizona's draw system, Mexican tags are allocated by SEMARNAT through registered UMAs (wildlife management units). There is no luck involved — there is access, money, and timing.

How the allocation works

Each UMA receives a limited number of harvest permits based on annual population surveys. Outfitters with long-term relationships to specific UMAs receive a portion of those permits to sell to international hunters. We work with a select group of UMAs in central and coastal Sonora with track records of book-class rams and ethical management.

Cost reality

Expect USD $75,000–$120,000 all-in depending on the UMA, ram quality and conservation fees. This is not a discount hunt. The price reflects the rarity of the tag, the cost of UMA management, and a 100% opportunity rate — no permit holder has gone home empty in over a decade.

What you get for that

  • Allocated tag (SEMARNAT permit and CITES export).
  • 7–10 day fully outfitted hunt with sheep specialist guides.
  • Helicopter scouting in some units to locate the target ram.
  • Spike camps, all meals, transportation and trophy care.
  • Trophy preparation, export paperwork, and U.S. Fish & Wildlife import assistance.

Timing

The Mexican season runs November through March. December and January are the sweet spot: rams are visible in pre-rut, weather is cool, and helicopter scouting is most effective. Book 12–24 months out for the best UMAs.
